Mit dem Kommando „hmc installios“ kann ein Virtual-I/O-Server interaktiv installiert werden:

hmc installios [-e] [-f] [-q] [-u] [-v] <hmc> [<label>]
   -e : erase the specified label from /etc/nimol.conf
   -f : force erasing a label (only valid with '-e')
   -q : query for labels created
   -u : unconfigure installios installation resources.

Dazu wird das Kommando ohne weitere Optionen mit dem Namen der für die Installation zu verwendenden HMC als einziges Argument gestartet. Alle für die Installation notwendigen Informationen, wie Virtual-I/O-Server, IP-Adresse, Netzmaske, Gateway, Installations Image usw., werden interaktiv abgefragt:

Nach den Abfragen der notwendigen Informationen läuft die Installation dann ohne einen weiteren manuellen Eingriff ab. Am Ende der Installation wird der Virtual-I/O-Server dann rebootet. 

Der Virtual-I/O-Server kann aber erst verwendet werden, wenn die Lizenzbestimmungen von IBM akzeptiert wurden.  Außerdem sollte für den Benutzer padmin ein Passwort nach der Installation gesetzt werden. Beides geht am einfachsten mittels Login über die Konsole als Benutzer padmin („lpar console„).
