Add VLAN(s) to SEA(s)

We show how to add VLANs 516 and 517 to an existing virtual Ethernet adapter of a SEA. In our case, the SEA in question is connected to virtual switch ETHAPPL and has already two virtual Ethernet adapters. We want to add the 2 new VLANs to the second adapter.

Step 1: Determine SEA and virtual Ethernet adapter

We run “vios lssea -V” in order to identify the correct virtual ethernet adapter for the first VIOS:

$ vios lssea -V ms1-vio1
SEA    LNAGG  NAME   TYPE     VSWITCH    MODE  ACTIVE  PRIORITY  PVID  VLAN_TAG_IDS
ent6   -      ent2   real     -          -     -       -         -     -
ent6   -      ent5   virtual  ETHERNET0  VEB   True    1         1     900
ent6   -      ent4   control  ETHCTRL    -     -       -         1     None
ent10  -      ent1   real     -          -     -       -         -     -
ent10  -      ent9   virtual  ETHAPPL    VEB   True    1         2     514
ent10  -      ent8   virtual  ETHAPPL    VEB   True    1         1     511
ent10  -      ent7   control  ETHCTRL    -     -       -         2     None
$

The SEA is ent10 and the second virtual ethernet adapter is ent8.

To find out the slot number, we run “vios lssea” again, this time with option “-a”:

$ vios lssea -a ms1-vio1
SEA    LNAGG  NAME   TYPE     STATUS  SPEED               VSWITCH    MODE  PHYSLOC
ent6   -      ent2   real     Up      10Gbps Full Duplex  -          -     U78DA.ND0.WZS15XY-P0-C0-T1-S2
ent6   -      ent5   virtual  -       -                   ETHERNET0  VEB   U9105.22A.89B3512-V1-C21-T0
ent6   -      ent4   control  -       -                   ETHCTRL    -     U9105.22A.89B3512-V1-C20-T0
ent10  -      ent1   real     Up      10Gbps Full Duplex  -          -     U78DA.ND0.WZS15XY -P0-C0-T0-S1
ent10  -      ent9   virtual  -       -                   ETHAPPL    VEB   U9105.22A.89B3512-V1-C32-T0
ent10  -      ent8   virtual  -       -                   ETHAPPL    VEB   U9105.22A.89B3512-V1-C31-T0
ent10  -      ent7   control  -       -                   ETHCTRL    -     U9105.22A.89B3512-V1-C30-T0
$

From the output we see that the slot number is 31.

Repeat this for the second VIOS. In our case the configuration is identical, so we end up with the same slot number.

Step 2: Add the VLAN(s) to the virtual ethernet adapters

VLANs can be added by using “lpar addvlan”. The LPAR, slot number and the additional VLANs must be specified:

$ lpar addvlan ms1-vio1 31 516,517
$

Repeat this for the second VIOS, remember to use the slot number found for the second VIOS:

$ lpar addvlan ms1-vio2 31 516,517
$

Step 3: Check the SEAs for the additional VLANs

$ vios lssea -V ms1-vio1
SEA    LNAGG  NAME   TYPE     VSWITCH    MODE  ACTIVE  PRIORITY  PVID  VLAN_TAG_IDS
ent6   -      ent2   real     -          -     -       -         -     -
ent6   -      ent5   virtual  ETHERNET0  VEB   True    1         1     900
ent6   -      ent4   control  ETHCTRL    -     -       -         1     None
ent10  -      ent1   real     -          -     -       -         -     -
ent10  -      ent9   virtual  ETHAPPL    VEB   True    1         2     514
ent10  -      ent8   virtual  ETHAPPL    VEB   True    1         1     511,516,517
ent10  -      ent7   control  ETHCTRL    -     -       -         2     None
$

The new additional VLANs are active!
