Installation via the HMC

Probably the easiest way to install a Virtual I/O Server is via the HMC. You can install either a Virtual I/O Server installation image in ISO format or a fullback of a Virtual I/O Server. Installation images must be stored on the HMC, a fullback can also be used from a remote server via NFS.

The installation itself can be carried out either interactively (command “hmc installios”) or non-interactively (command “vios installios”). The options are identical in both cases. With the non-interactive installation, all required information such as client IP, client netmask, gateway and installation image or fullback to be used must be specified on the command line. With the interactive installation, all required information is requested.

Virtual I/O Server installation images can be managed using the LPAR tool on the HMC, see Managing Virtual I/O Server Installation Images.
