Foreword

A Hardware Management Console, HMC for short, is a physical or virtual appliance from IBM. It is used to manage and configure IBM POWER servers, so-called managed systems.

The LPAR tool is a command line-based tool from PowerCampus 01 for easy administration of IBM PowerVM environments.

The aim of this manual is to provide a detailed description of the configuration and administration of a Hardware Management Console. The LPAR tool is used in many places. Nevertheless, the manual should also be of interest to administrators who do not use the LPAR tool.

Changes may occur with each new HMC version, so the official documentation from IBM should always be consulted.

The manual assumes the following:

    • Basic knowledge of working on the command line of a UNIX system.
    • A basic understanding of virtualization is helpful, but is not required.
