YUM repositories can be available either locally (access via local file system) or remotely (access via FTP, HTTP or HTTPS). In order that a YUM repository can be used by YUM, it must be stored in the YUM configuration.

The createrepo command from the RPM package of the same name is required to create local YUM repositories. For the administration of YUM repositories the RPM package yum-utils provides some usefull commands. Both RPM packages should therefore be installed at least on systems with local YUM repositories (e.g. NIM server):
