8.2.1. Installation using a CD or DVD
If the managed system has a DVD drive, the virtual I/O servers can be installed using a DVD. In many cases, however, newer managed systems no longer have their own DVD drive. But, there is still the option of installing using USB.
We therefore show the installation using a DVD for an older system, ms04 (Power740). The DVD drive has the physical location code P2-D9 and is assigned to the SAS adapter in slot P1-T9. The DVD drive can only be used by one virtual I/O server at a time; the SAS adapter in slot P1-T9 must be assigned to a virtual I/O server in order to use the DVD drive!
For the installation via DVD, the two DVD images must first be burned to DVD. A DVD writer is available as device cd0 on our AIX NIM server aixnim. The first DVD image can be burned directly to an empty DVD with the burn_cd command:
aixnim # burn_cd -d /dev/cd0 Virtual_IO_Server_Base_Install_3.1.2.20_DVD_1_of_2_042021_LCD8250106.iso
Running readcd ...
…
aixnim #
The second DVD image is in ZIP format and must therefore first be unpacked before it can then be burned onto a second blank DVD:
aixnim # unzip Virtual_IO_Server_Base_Install_3.1.2.20_DVD_2_of_2_042021_LCD8250206.iso.ZIP
Archive: Virtual_IO_Server_Base_Install_3.1.2.20_DVD_2_of_2_042021_LCD8250206.iso.ZIP
ZIP/390 Build:10/01/13 by Data 21

…
aixnim #
The two burned DVDs should be labeled, in order to see easily what is on the DVD, e.g.: “VIOS 3.1.2.20 1/2” and “VIOS 3.1.2.20 2/2“ or something similar can be used.
The SAS adapter with the DVD drive was assigned to the virtual I/O server ms04-vio1. We therefore insert the first installation DVD (“VIOS 3.1.2.20 1/2“) into the DVD drive and activate the virtual I/O server. We select the boot mode SMS and specify the profile standard, at the same time we start a console session (option ‘-c‘):
$ lpar -p standard activate -b sms -c ms04-vio1

You must also accept the IBM software license terms by entering ‘a‘ (Accept). Then you are logged in as user padmin and can carry out further configuration. Before you can start an IOS command, the I/O server license must be accepted, otherwise no command can be executed and a warning always appears:

The I/O Server license must be accepted before running this command.
Only the chlang command may be run before accepting the license.
To view the license, run the license command with the -view option.
If the -lang flag is not specified the license will be displayed in
the current locale (set by the chlang command). If the license is not
available in the language selected, English will be the default.
To accept the license, run the license command with the -accept option.
Locale currently set to: "en_US".
